He took his degree "Summa cum laude" in Medicine at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Rome on july 17th 1967. In 1968, thanks to a grant from the Italian Foreing Office, He was enrolled to a six months clerkship at the Haematogical Division of Saint Louis Hospital in Paris. In January 1973 He was appointed assistant professor in Internal Medicine. Two years later he was appointed attending phisician and since then He has been working full time in the Hematological Division of the University Hospital Policlinico Gemelli of Rome. Since 1992 He is the head of the above mentioned Hematological Division. In 1981 Dr Leone spent 4 months in Seattle at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center working in Donnall Thomas's team of bone marrow transplantation. In 1988 He was awarded associate professor in Internal Medicine , and since then he has been holding the course of Medical Oncology (1988-90) and Hematology (90-) in the School of Medicine of the Catholic University. In 1995 he was awarded full professor in Hematology. Since then is director of the Institute of Hematology of the Catholic University. Dr. Leone is author/coauthor of more than 700 scientific publications of hematologic subject ( Myelodysplastic and Myeloprolioferative Syndromes, Leukemia, Lymphoma ,Bone Marrow Transplantation, Hemostasis and Thrombosis), most of them published on qualified journals as New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, PNAS, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Oncogene, Leukemia, Clinical Cancer Research , Experimental Hematology, British Journal of Hematology, European Journal of Haematology, Transfusion, Haematologica, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Cancer etc.. Prof. Leone is an active member of numerous scientific societies (ASH, EBMT, EHA, ISEH,ISHT,SIE, SIES, SISET). In 2009 he established a new on line medical Journal the “Mediterranean Journal of Hematology and Infectious Diseases “ www.mjhid.org , indexed by PUBMED,Web of Science, Scopus , Google Scholar , DOAJ et al .
